More recently it has been found that the likely active element is Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are needed by the body, but are not produced by the body, so we need to include them in our diet.

In cod and other fish oils there two sorts of Omega 3s - EPA and DHA.

These two forms of Omega 3s are found in different proportions in fish oil and cod liver oil, but according to French scientists the body can transfrom them into each other depending on its needs.

It is now thought that fish oil Omega 3s may act to reduce joint inflammation and so reduce pain.
